Big Sky Powder Hound Winter Ale

A- / 4.0
Big Sky Powder Hound Winter Ale

Big Sky:
Two words describe winter in our neck of the woods… cold, dark, and snowy. Just the way we like it! At 7.2% ABV, Powder Hound Winter Ale gives just the right amount of warmth, balanced by its rich taste and generous dose of Hallertau, Palisade, and Amarillo hops. After a cold day of getting it done or just relaxing, the avalanche of flavor will have you saying these four words – “I’ll have another Powder Hound”!

Available October through January.

A- / 4.0

Appearance – Amber-orange, mostly clear with a bit of floating sediment, small amount of creamy off-white head with little retention.

Smell – Strong citrus, sweet malt, hints of caramel and alcohol.

Taste – Complex mix of hops up front (mostly tasting orange, with some other citrus and a little hint of pine) offset somewhat by some sweeter malts, with hints of spice. Finishes with a big hit of bitter citrus.

Mouthfeel – Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation, refreshing.

Drinkability – Smells a bit like a light IPA, tastes like an amber ale, finishes like an IPA, so I’m not sure why Big Sky decided it should be a “winter ale”. Still, just because they’ve mislabeled it doesn’t mean it tastes bad. I actually quite like this.
